The rapid decline of Acropora cervicornis and Acropora palmata has often been linked with coral reef deterioration in the Caribbean; yet, it remains controversial whether these species are currently recovering or still declining. In this study, the status of ten populations of A. palmata in Los Roques National Park (LRNP), Venezuela is presented. Six of these populations showed signs of recovery. Ten 80 m2 belt-transects were surveyed at each of the ten reef sites. Within belt-transects, each colony was measured (maximum diameter and height) and its status (healthy, diseased or injured) was recorded. Populations in recovery were defined by a dominance of small to medium-sized colonies in densities >1 colony per 10 m2, together with 75% undamaged colonies, a low prevalence of diseases (<10%), and a low density of predators (0.25 snails per colony). Based on allozyme analysis of seven polymorphic loci in four populations (N = 30), a moderate to high-genetic connectivity among these populations (F ST = 0.048) was found with a predominance of sexual over asexual reproduction (N* : N = 1; N go : N = 0.93–1). Both ecological and molecular data support a good prognosis for the recovery of this species in Los Roques.  相似文献

The linear birth and death process with catastrophes is formulated as a right continuous random walk on the non-negative integers which evolves in continuous time with an instantaneous jump rate proportional to the current value of the process. It is shown that distributions of the population size can be represented in terms of those of a certain Markov branching process.  The multiannual cyclic fluctuations exhibited by arvicoline rodents in the Northern Hemisphere have attracted the attention of population ecologists. However, despite the abundant information on small rodent dynamics in South America, there are no studies reporting cyclic population dynamics. Here, we report evidence of cyclic population dynamics in a South American small rodent, the longhaired field mouse (Abrothrix longipilis) from southern temperate forests in Chile. The time-series analyses showed that longhaired field mice dynamics are better represented by a second-order autoregressive model characterized by 3-year cyclic dynamics. The 3-year cycles are clearly shown in the autocorrelation factor (ACF) pattern and in the dominant frequency of the spectral analysis. In addition, we determined nonlinear effects of the Antarctic Oscillation Index (AAOI). The results shown here pointed out that we need the integration of studies about cyclic small rodent populations from the different continents and beyond the Northern Hemisphere to resolve the enigma underlying the cyclic population dynamics exhibited by many small rodent species. We investigated demographic responses of the common brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula, a medium-sized arboreal marsupial, after a prescribed fuel reduction burn on Magnetic Island, tropical north Queensland, Australia. Possums were live-trapped every month for 14 months before the fire and 11 months after the fire in both the burnt and unburnt areas; measurements of individuals were taken each month and demographic parameters were modelled using capture–mark–recapture data. Significant differences between the burnt and unburnt sites were found following the fire; recruitment was lower in the unburnt area, where population size also declined. In the burnt area, population size and recruitment displayed a tendency to increase after the fire, while capture probability declined, suggesting that an influx of new individuals, attracted to re-sprouting vegetation, had resulted in trap saturation. There was no detectable effect of the fire on survival, and no fire-induced mortalities were observed. We conclude that a low-intensity, prescribed, fuel-reduction burn had no obvious negative consequences for this possum population.  相似文献

Kurdistan province of Iran is one of the main places for producing chickpea, and there is no published research on root-nodulating bacteria of this crop. Plant samples were collected and a total of 73 Rhizobium strains were isolated from root nodules. Nodulation test was done on chickpea plants. Phenotypic characteristics of the 16 representative strains were determined based on the standard bacteriological methods. Total soluble cell protein patterns by electrophoresis approach (SDS-PAGE) showed heterogeneity among the tested rhizobia strains. Based on the phenotypic features, Rhizobium strains of three groups belong to different species of the genus Mesorhizobioum including M. ciceri and M. mediterraneum and Mesorhizobium sp. The PCR technique was employed for amplification of 16S rDNA and atpD genes. For further characterisation, amplified fragment of 16S rDNA gene from a representative strain (AK21) using primers 41F and 1488R was subjected to sequencing. Sequences were aligned by BLAST software at NCBI GenBank and results showed 99% similarity with M. mediterraneum strain BKBCF3q.  相似文献

Though there are many problems on the usefulness of the logistic curve, it may be necessary to examine before discussing these problems whether or not the actual data fit to the theoretical values. It has been clarified in this paper that the relation between the population density and its rate of increase per individual described by the differential equation (1) is represented by a straight line on a finite difference diagram on which Ni+1−Ni/Ni values are plotted against Ni+1. Utilizing this linear relation we may examine the fittness of the logistic curve to the actual data and when it is fitted we may estimate the parameters of the logistic equation by (5) and (6). The result of the application of this method to the experimental populations of azuki bean weevil indicates that the relation between parent and progeny densities fits well to the logistic type as has been proved byFujita andUtida (1953) who utilized the linear reltion between 1/R+2σ and parent density where R is the apparent rate of reproduction and σ is a constant dependent primarily upon the length of adult life (0≦σ≦1).  相似文献
